After the architectural design, the second most visible thing with a house is its outer wall material.
I have 4 strong candidates for exterior cladding:
1. Wood - Horizontal
2. Wood - Vertical
3. Wood - Burned
4. Metal - Corrugated
The more special options, Burned wood and corrugated metal, would be beautiful I'm sure, but There are couple of concerns. Firstly, how well will they age, and secondly, in 40 years, will they look like the products of their era, quite like plastic (or concrete in some respect).
Wood cladding is the absolute classic and for both aesthetic and functional reasons, I think the vertical is more suited to what we are trying to achieve.
